Duke of Edinburgh's International Award - Scotland Exchange
Debbie Dodds

This week, two of our DofE mentors, Lisa and Varia, who were chosen personally by the Head of the DofE Germany, went down with Mr Bridge to the Head Office in Osterburken, to meet members of the Scottish DofE board. Here are a few lines from them about their visit:

This week from 3 to 5 December the Duke of Edinburgh´s International Award went to Osterburken in Baden-Württemberg. We met with the Duke of Edinburgh´s Scottish board and showed them around Osterburken and the nearby town Buchen. We also met with the Mayor of Buchen who is a big supporter of the Award, and went to visit the local Gymnasium there. We discussed a few details about the upcoming exchange next year in July and had dinner together. Overall it was a very successful trip and we accomplished a lot. Not only is the Gymnasium in Buchen going to hopefully run the Award, starting sometime next year, but we have also started to plan a very interesting exchange programme.

On Tuesday afternoon, our friendly metal-working contractors, WeMe-Metall from Vechta, came to ISB to erect our 7 meter Christmas tree in front of the school building. Not an easy task, but the guys have quite some experience now, having erected our tree for the past 4 years, and all went smoothly. And what a beautiful tree it is!

In school, we have two smaller trees - one at the bottom of the stairs in the ground floor foyer and one on the first floor, both of which - along with other decorative elements - add to the seasonal feeling here at ISB.

As in the past four years, we were once again visited on Tuesday by the St Lucia Singers from Sweden, marking the start of the Advent season at ISB.

For 30 minutes, the First Floor Foyer was overflowing with Early Learning and Elementary students and staff and the angelic tones of the St Lucia Singers who sang seasonal songs from three countries and in three languages: Swedish, English and German.

Our students were certainly fascinated by the young people in white and enjoyed singing along to well-known songs such as „We Wish you a Merry Christmas“ and „All I Want for Christmas is You“.

Thanks go to the Swedish Consulate for supporting this annual event. We look forward to welcoming them at ISB again next year.

On this very special evening ISB students, parents and teachers celebrated the achievements of the IGCSE class of 2018 as they received their IGCSE and ICE certificates. The event was well-attended and was supported by the current Grade 10 who helped to organise and run it as a rehearsal for their own IGCSE ceremony in 2019.

The evening began with piano and violin music. There were also two poetry readings. One student read her own poem entitled 'A Place to Grow' which captures, in verse, their view of the International School of Bremen.

Another successful year saw the Duke of Edinburgh‘s Award Team at ISB present 14 students with their

Bronze Certificates during the IGCSE Certificate Presentation Ceremony.  Each student put in a great deal of effort to finish all four sections of their Award, bringing together over a year's worth of sweat and tears.

During the ceremony, all four sections were acknowledged, with some very impressive service, skill and physical activities amongst them. All of the students should be very proud of themselves for what is an amazing achievement!
