About the school

THE MISSION

In partnership with family and community, The International School of Bremen (ISB) maintains a high commitment to educational excellence in both teaching and learning. It provides an academic, social and physical education in English that promotes the development of responsible, ethical citizens in an ever-changing global society.

THE CITY

Bremen, located in Northern Germany, has four distinct sides to its personality:

  • A fairy-tale mood that stems from an illustrious past, preserved and tangible in the historic city
  • The business competence and non-stop activity of a port, trading and commercial area
  • The ambitious and sometimes provocative ideas that emanate from a genuine cultural centre and historic universities
  • And finally, the serious yet serene atmosphere of a modern city whose residents enjoy life.

THE SCHOOL

ISB is a private, co-educational, college-preparatory, English-speaking school. It was established in 1998 to serve students in the international community of Bremen. It provides an educational alternative to the German State system primarily for the children of growing international businesses and a new English-speaking university. Today our students and staff represent 35 countries from across the world. Class sizes are generally small with an average of 18 students per grade in the secondary school.

FACULTY

The dedicated and experienced teachers at ISB come from a number of countries, including Australia, Germany, India, The Netherlands, Canada, Spain, United Kingdom, South Africa, Burma and United States of America. The members of our teaching staff are certified according to the standards of their home countries. Many of our teachers hold Master Degrees or Doctorates.

MEMBERSHIP & ACCREDITATION

The School is a member of CEEB, ECIS, CIS and IBO.

It possesses the Middle States Accreditation and is recognized by the State of Bremen, Germany

THE CURRICULUM

Elementary (Early learning 3-5 year olds through Grade 5)

Within the ISB Elementary Section the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) is offered. This is a widely recognized course of study that has clear academic benchmarks that set standards for basic skills on which to build an upper level education.

Preparatory Programmes (Grades 6 through 8)

All students pursue a broad based academic programme. Three foreign languages are offered Spanish, French and German. Students bringing other mother languages can often be accommodated within the tradition of an International School.  We have been able to support Farsi, Chinese and Russian. Those students with weak English are supported through the English as a Second Language programme.

Pre IB Programme (Grades 9 and 10)

The students participate in the University of Cambridge IGCSE programme with a culminating examination in May of Grade 10. Completion and success is not a prerequisite to enter into the IB but is used as an indicator of achievement and future success.

International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (Grades 11 and 12)

The lB is a two year pre-university course designed to facilitate the mobility of students and promote international understanding. The comprehensive course of study for the IB Diploma is designed to provide students with a balanced education. All students take the external examinations. ISB prides itself on being the only school in the State of Bremen which offers the IB programme.

Graduation Requirements

It is expected that students graduating from ISB will have successfully completed the IB Diploma programme. In addition to an IB Diploma or Certificate a student will be awarded an ISB Graduation Diploma at one of 3 tiers depending on their final school grades in Grade 12.

Tertiary Education

Graduates from ISB have moved on to various tertiary centres of education. These include:

  • in Germany: Jacobs University, Hamburg University, Oldenburg University, Münster University, Karlsruher Carl Benz Institute, Fachhochschule Bremerhaven, Bremen University, Munich Business College
  • in the USA: St. John’s New York, Wheaton University, Florida Institute of Technology, Connor College
  • in the UK: Manchester University, London Metropolitan University, Greenwich University
  • and elsewhere in Europe: Groningen University and Arnhem Art College.

Notes:

  • Advice is given on the choice of university or college and application procedures.

  • For students wishing to attend American universities we are able to offer preparation and accredited SAT testing, through our affiliation with the Middle States Committee on Institution-Wide Accreditation.
